Distinguished Speaker Series

The World Affairs Council was incorporated in 1990, the same year that Marathon Oil corporation relocated to HoustonMarathon soon became involved in the work of the Council and has always been a key factor in our growth, providing representation on our board of directors and acting as a valued partner in our educational mission.  In 2006, Marathon pledged $150,000 to be given over a three-year period to sponsor a fall Speaker Series. Their commitment gives the Council the confidence and resources necessary to sustain our educational mission and to operate a high level of quality as we reach out to new constituencies.  We deeply appreciate this support.

Marathon Oil Corporation is known as a company that lives its values. These include conducting business at the highest level of integrity, acting as responsible stewards of the environment and reaching out the communities where they are located by sponsoring  civic and education opportunities for all citizens.  The Speaker Series is another indication of Marathon's commitment to education and to building a better world.

"Our lives are increasingly affected by global affairs. We may differ on policies, but the United States needs to be engaged in a thoughtful way as the issues are vital to our future. The World Affairs Council system is dedicated to non-partisan public education on world affairs and I urge you to participate in its important work."
George Bush, 41st President of the United States
