The Council has applied for 6 hours of G/T credit by TAGT. The World Affairs Council is recognized by the State Board for Educator Certification as a Continuing Education Provider for the State of Texas (CPE #501096).

Ken Vickery, North Carolina State University
Dr. Kenneth P. Vickery is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Advising in the History Department at North Carolina State. University, where he has taught for almost 30 years. He received his B.A. degree with Phi Beta Kappa honors at Duke University and went on to study sub-Saharan African history at Yale University, where he earned his Ph.D.


Mark Schroeder, STRATFOR
As Director of Sub-Saharan Africa Analysis, Mr. Schroeder leads the development of STRATFOR’s geopolitical analysis and forecasts for the sub-Saharan region. Mr. Schroeder has developed extensive analysis of the militancy campaign that has disrupted oil production in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. Prior to joining STRATFOR, Mr. Schroeder worked for several years in West and Southern Africa in the non-profit relief and development sector, and traveled extensively throughout the sub-regions while on assignment.   

 

Seamus Murphy, Photojournalist

Seamus Murphy has photographed many countries in Africa, including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Gabon, Kenya, Mauritania, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Uganda. He has worked extensively in the Middle East, and produced a body of work on the West Bank city of Nablus from his experiences working on a feature film "Paradise Now," shot during the second Intifada. Murphy is the recipient of many international honors including six World Press Awards, and a World Understanding Award for his portfolio on Afghanistan. Murphy blends humor and irony with deep insight. "Photography," he says, "is part history, part magic."

 

Dr. Agnes Leslie, University of Florida
As the outreach director for the Center for African Studies Dr. Leslie promotes the teaching of Africa in universities, colleges, schools, communities and businesses in the southeastern United States. In addition, she organizes training workshops and institutes to equip professors and teachers to effectively teach about Africa.
