The World Affairs Council helps students understand their world – the cultures, peoples, economies, and geography as well as the conflicts, challenges, and possibilities. Through more than 60 intriguing and interactive events each year, our educational outreach brings together students from all parts of Houston.
They meet world leaders, question, and discuss the international topics, discovering how they affect their lives. Council programs promote civic participation – one of the cornerstones of democracy – and build globally competent citizens.
We also offer professional development for teachers, an international resource library, and lesson plans on current international topics. Our teacher workshops are certified by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.

Note to Teachers from Beth Madison Chairman of the World Affairs Council
You are the most important resource for your students learning.
We applaud your efforts and will support your work with programs on international affairs that fit the curriculum and make your classroom more exciting and relevant than ever.
I have asked the Council staff to find ways, during my year, to give students more hands-on experience such as interviewing speakers and moderating events.
Building students’ knowledge base, developing leadership skills, and encouraging life-long learning through civic engagement are goals for this year.I want to hear from you and welcome your suggestions. You can reach me at BethMadison@wachouston.org
