From cement to cell phones, Mexicans pay more than their American neighbors. Why? Because entrenched monopolies, family owned companies, and powerful unions use outdated laws and invested political interests to restrict competition. But that is about to change. True competition could become a reality in Mexico under a new law that gives muscle to the government’s anti-monopoly agency.

Eduardo Pérez Motta is the man charged with opening up the Mexican economy. He was appointed Chairman of the Federal Commission on Competition, Mexico (CFC) in 2004. Before joining the CFC, he was the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Mexico to the World Trade Organization. Prior to this, he acted as head of the Representation Office of the Ministry of Trade and Industrial Development in Brussels, where he coordinated the Mexican team during the negotiation of the FTA between Mexico and the European Union.

Mr. Pérez Motta has also served as Chief of Advisors to the Minister of Trade and Industrial Development and worked in the Ministry of Finance as Chief of Advisors to the Under Secretary of Revenues, where he designed customs law. Mr. Pérez Motta also participated in the negotiations for NAFTA. He has a PhD in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
