Making peace in the long-troubled Middle East is likely to be one of the top priorities of the next American president. He will need to take account of the important lessons from past attempts, candidly described by Ambassador Martin Indyk.
Ambassador Indyk gives vivid details of high-level meetings, showing how difficult it can be for American presidents to understand the motives and intentions of regional leaders and how easy it is for them to miss the rare opportunities for progress. As a new administration takes power, this experienced diplomat distills the lessons of past failures to chart a new way forward.
Former United States Ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk is currently a senior fellow and Director of the Saban center for Middle East Policy in the Foreign Policy Studies program at the Brookings Institution. Ambassador Indyk has taught at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Columbia University, Tel Aviv University, and Macquarie University. Ambassador Indyk has served as special assistant to President Clinton and as senior director of Near East and South Asian Affairs at the United States National Security Council, as well as having served eight years as the founding Executive Director for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. His latest book, Innocent Abroad: An Intimate Account of American Diplomacy in the Middle East. will be available for sale at the program.
