Americans have a long history of service abroad, helping countries rebuild after conflict has ended. Professionals from all walks of life have made an important difference in Afghanistan, Africa and countless other post-conflict situations around the world. The Civilian Response Corps was recently created by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to further encourage this effort and to increase our capacity to respond quickly and effectively. The Corps pre-screens and trains volunteers and civilian federal employees to respond immediately with the reconstruction and stabilization assistance that is crucial to successful outcomes.

The U.S. Department of State asks all citizens to consider opportunities in the corps. Ambassador Herbst will talk about the impact of American volunteers in crisis spots around the globe and opportunities that are available to you in the new Civilian Response Corps.

Ambassador John E. Herbst currently serves as the Coordinator for the Office of Reconstruction and Stabilization. Mr. Herbst is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, and holds the rank of Minister-Counselor. Prior to his appointment as Coordinator, he served as Ambassador to Ukraine from 2003-May 2006, and Ambassador to Uzbekistan from 2000-2003. He joined the Foreign Service in 1979.

This program is co-sponsored with the Greater Houston Partnership.

"Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and that, I am sure, is the ultimate and sincere object of us both. We both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves."
