Twenty years ago, President Ronald Reagan’s speech at the Brandenberg Gate shocked the world: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Some called the statement naïve and others called it American meddling, but the words showed Reagan’s personal conviction and were the result of a new trust between world leaders. Romesh Ratnesar will examine the events and the relationships that led to the removal of the Wall and the end of the Cold War.
Romesh Ratnesar is Deputy Managing Editor of TIME. He has written more than 20 cover stories for the U.S. and international editions, on topics that include the war in Iraq, global terrorism, the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ratnesar spent two years in London as a writer for TIME's European magazine and has reported from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, India, Paris, Brussels, Bilbao, Prague, and The Hague. Prior to joining TIME, he was a reporter-researcher at The New Republic and has also written for Slate, Lingua Franca, the Washington Monthly, Mother Jones and The Washington Post. Ratnesar received a master’s degree in history from Stanford University.
Copies of his book, Tear Down This Wall, will be available at the program.
"The four words that Ronald Reagan hurled at Mikhail Gorbachev were an exhortation, even a demand, but they were also part of a dialogue, a partnership, and a friendship that changed the world." —Strobe Talbott Author of The Great Experiment |
