The sixth most populous country in the world and facing enormous challenges, Pakistan is certain to be at the top of US foreign policy considerations. Pakistan needs the support of the entire international community, particularly the United States, as it moves to become a more secure and fully democratic society. America also needs Pakistan, as a friend and strategic partner in the struggle against terrorism. How can both countries increase economic cooperation and meet the challenge of global terrorism?
Husain Haqqani is Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States. He previously served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Sri Lanka and as a political adviser to three Pakistani prime ministers: Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto. Ambassador Haqqani came to the U.S. in 2002 as a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. He taught international relations at Boston University and was an adjunct Professor at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. He is a leading journalist, diplomat, and former advisor to Pakistani Prime ministers. His syndicated column is published in several newspapers in South Asia and the Middle East, including Oman Tribune, Jang, The Indian Express, Gulf News and The Nation (Pakistan). |
